Live-In Home Care: What It Is, What It Costs, and How It Works

When a loved one needs round-the-clock support, families often assume the only options are a nursing facility or hiring someone to sit bedside every hour of the day. But live-in home care offers a middle path that keeps your parent safe, comfortable, and in the home they love — without the sticker shock of traditional 24-hour care.

What Live-In Home Care Actually Looks Like

Live-in care means a professional caregiver stays in your loved one’s home for an extended shift — typically 24 hours — and is available throughout the day and night. Unlike hourly 24-hour care where two or three caregivers rotate in rigid eight-hour shifts, a live-in caregiver follows your parent’s natural daily rhythm. They help with morning routines, meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, companionship, and nighttime needs.

The caregiver does get rest periods during the night, which is what makes live-in care different from continuous hourly care. For most families, this is more than enough coverage — your loved one still has someone right there if they need to get up at 2 a.m. or feel anxious in the middle of the night.

At Embark Care, we build a small, consistent care team so your parent sees familiar faces. Continuity matters, especially for clients living with memory loss or cognitive decline. We match caregivers to clients based on personality, needs, and schedule — not just whoever is available.

Who Benefits Most from Live-In Care

Live-in care tends to be the right fit when a parent:

  • Has moderate to advanced dementia and needs consistent supervision
  • Is at high fall risk and shouldn’t be alone overnight
  • Recently came home from the hospital and needs extended recovery support
  • Wants to stay home but can no longer manage daily tasks independently
  • Is receiving hospice services and needs a caregiver present between nurse visits

If your parent only needs help a few hours a day — getting dressed, preparing meals, running errands — then a shorter daily visit may be the better starting point. You can always scale up. That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of home care over a facility.

How Live-In Care Compares on Cost

Families are often surprised to learn that live-in home care can cost the same, or sometimes less than a bed in an assisted living community — or a nursing home. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the national median cost for a private room in a nursing facility exceeds $9,000 per month. Assisted living averages around $5,000 per month, depending on the level of care.

Live-in home care rates vary, but they are structured as a daily or weekly flat rate rather than an hourly charge. When you break down the math, you’re paying for one caregiver across a full day rather than billing three separate eight-hour shifts at an hourly rate. That difference adds up fast.

Embark Care keeps our rates competitive — below both the Texas agency median and the national average for non-medical home care. We also operate with no contracts and no hourly minimums. Many franchise agencies require three- to four-hour visit minimums and 12 to 20 hours per week before they’ll take a client. We don’t. If your family’s needs change week to week, your care plan changes with them.

Can the VA Help Pay for Live-In Care?

Yes. If your parent is a veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, several VA programs may cover part or all of the cost of live-in home care. The Aid and Attendance pension benefit, the Veterans Pension, and the Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) program can all be used toward non-medical home care services. Qualifying veterans may pay nothing out of pocket.

Embark Care works directly with the VA on billing and paperwork, so families don’t have to navigate the system alone. Visit our resources page to learn more about VA home care eligibility, or give us a call and we’ll walk you through it.

Getting Started Without a Long-Term Commitment

One of the biggest fears families have about live-in care is the commitment. What if it doesn’t work out? What if Mom doesn’t like the caregiver? What if Dad’s condition changes?

Because Embark Care requires no contracts, you’re never locked in. We serve 43 counties across Texas and 10 counties in Arkansas, with offices in Tyler, Paris, Greenville, and Texarkana. Our team has over 45 years of combined experience in non-medical home care, and we’ve served hundreds of families across the region.
